Audio: Oprah Winfrey and Wayne Dyer discuss the Tao https://youtu.be/iJ37fndI3bU Please keep in mind that Oprah Winfrey and Wayne Dyer focus as much on the spiritual aspects as on anything else. We certainly cannot ignore the spiritual content or the “advice for living” angle in the Tao Te Ching, but we are here as literary (and philosophy)  scholars! This audio will help to give you a well-rounded perspective on The Tao Te Ching. Listen and take notes to prepare for the Discussion Board forum. Tao Te Ching 3 translations.pdf ============== Dante’s Inferno Excerpt from The Inferno: inferno_cantos_1_and_3 _1_.pdf Youtube video: Inferno overview and summary. This video explains that The Inferno is just one of three parts. The entire three-part work is called “The Divine Comedy.” Watch this. It goes to explain some of the characters, and to give you an understanding of what is going on. It’s a great, easy-to-understand summary of The Inferno. You’ve been asked to read only a short portion of it, so this is all the more helpful. https://youtu.be/EE5ihycCq54 Why Dante’s Inferno stays relevant after 700 years   https://www.futurity.org/dante-divine-comedy-hell-1299902-2/ ======================= Answer both prompts, then post a Reply to at least one classmate. 1. Dante’s Inferno is very clear about what hell might look like, and why people are there. In addition, we readers can infer at least a little from our excerpt how the poor souls could have gone to heaven. Reading the supplementary material in the unit and watching the video give further clues. Tao Te Ching, on the other hand, is not quite as straightforward, but still gives us an idea of what heaven or a “heavenly” life might be like. Prompt: Use a quote or quotes from Tao Te Ching that explain from the author’s perspective what might cause misery or hellishness. Then compare this with what Dante was saying in The Inferno. Include a few sentences on why you think each of these texts have had such lasting value. Refer to the material in this Unit and in the translator’s introduction to help answer this question. 2. The final wrap up: which was your favorite text? Which one, if any, will you remember always? What would have liked to do differently in this course?
