Throughout the semester we have analyzed in detail how sports documentaries’ forms and styles relate to their larger institutional and industrial contexts. In the process, we have sought to use that information to think about the implications of these films and videos on people’s ways of understanding the sociopolitical world (informed by myth and ideology). We recognize how these documentaries both shape and are shaped by people’s understandings of their relations to the world. In the last half of the course we have focused more on how sports scandals have become a central part of the new media landscape and, in particular, how documentaries speak about sports scandals differently than other forms. In your final essay for the course I would like you bring these ideas together, demonstrating how documentaries about sports scandals reveal certain issues of conflict within society and then how documentaries speak about such conflicts (i.e. how do documentaries address scandal differently than other forms).
