To help understand culture from a diagnostic perspective, Schein suggests we develop categories that help clarify what is being observed. (Schein, pg. 190) The practicality of these categories is said to become helpful if they make sense of the disorder within the phenomena, defines underlying structures within the phenomena, or help predict to some extent how future phenomena are going to look. (Schein, pg. 190) As the study continuous Schein notes that our categories will become more and more abstract as our research develops.Developing these typologies, Schein suggests that there are disadvantages and advantages to developing our abstract concepts. (Schein, pg.190) The advantages consist of allowing us to potentially bring order to the variety of phenomena. The disadvantage to this method is that we risk having typologies that are so abstract that they do not sufficiently address the set of phenomena being recognized. Schein also brings up the dimensions set by Goffee and Jones, which approaches the process through self-diagnostic questionnaires. While this system can bring insight on aspects of the culture, Schein notes they lack actual validity because of the assumptions it requires. (Schein, pg. 194) The biggest issue is that the dimensions measured in this system, might not even relate to the organization.References:Schein, E. H. (2017). Organizational culture and leadership.
