Description Now that you have pulled together some quality material that expands the topic of the op-ed in an annotated bibliography, it’s time for you to write your own essay! Using the material you have gathered, you are required to write a more in-depth analysis of the topic you have chosen. Unlike your first assignment, in this essay you are not evaluating the arguments of others; you are presenting your own analysis of all of the issues at stake around the topic. Think of the output as a “written brief†which you are presenting to someone else (e.g., a prominent official) who has asked you to provide them with everything they need to know about “Topic X.â€) With such an assignment, you do not want to “argue†or “persuade†or “convince†someone of a particular point of view (the way an op-ed sets out to do). (Avoid using “I†for this reason while writing.) Instead, you want to inform them of all of the different viewpoints, issues, unresolved questions, and areas for future research that relate to your chosen topic. In other words, imagine that you are a “tour guide†for your chosen topic. You want to be as comprehensive and as unbiased as possible so that whomever is reading your brief feels better informed about the topic.
