We wanted to be a world power, and the only examples of “empire” were in Europe . . . So, we set out to create an empire, and as the idea of empire was being discussed among many Americans an opportunity presented itself; HAWAII! Hawaii was an independent kingdom that had duty-free rights on exporting sugar into the US. But as the world, and especially the Caribbean was changing, we decided to begin taxing Hawaiian sugar. Queen Liliuokalani retaliated by lessening the influence of Americans in Hawaiian government. All of this did, of course, bring about a coup, with the U.S. eventually annexing Hawaii as a territory, and this territory ultimately becoming the state of Hawaii.The link below gives more information on how we acquired Hawaii.
